It is to a background of a chorus of cicadas that Plato affirmed that some of life’s greatest pleasures come from certain sorts of mania - prophetic, poetic, cathartic, and erotic. Cicadas encourage us to give in to our senses, to live our live in complete acceptance of our emotions, in a harmony with that which influences us spiritually and emotionally. It was believed to be the task of cicadas to watch over humankind for the Muses and to report which humans honoured them and which did not. In exchange they were allowed to live without needing food or rest, and able to merely sing out joyfully both day and night.
